Rod Fergusson says you will find "No plans at the moment" to include a tab overlay map to d4 items.

Diablo 4 is omitting commonplace quality-of-life features from past titles - the tab overlay map. If you're a newcomer to the series and do not know what that's, essentially, pressing the tab opens a layout from the area you are in, however, it appears on top of the screen instead of in a separate pause menu. Diablo 3 moved it towards the top-right to make it less intrusive, almost resembling a larger and much more detailed minimap, but Diablo 4 gets rid of it altogether.

As reported by PushSquare, its absence was confirmed by Diablo lead Rod Fergusson on Twitter in reaction to a fan asking, "Will there be considered a TAB overlay map eventually added towards the game?" Fergusson said, "No plans at the moment."

For the time being, you will need to stick to using the minimap and waypoint markers to navigate the Mortal Realm. It looks like this will be the case even post-launch, though many around the subreddit the minimap is really a more immersive alternative they are happy to use within place from the overlay, while some say it might still do with a few tweaks, as an option to zoom out, a square variant, or settings for enlarging it.

The news hit the subreddit and quickly saw a thread turn off by moderators "Due towards the mass quantity of uncivil comments going on". Players are split in the middle, with lots of celebrating the news while some say it's another notch on Diablo 4's Bladebuckle Plated belt, inevitably resulting in chains and chains of arguments within the comments.

"I also feel the overlay map in [Diablo 2 and 3] [is] intrusive," BoilingCoconut commented. "We are extremely used to the old method of seeing the map, it is a habit. But I do such as the d4 items approach. The ability to place a marker and advice the player to where they would like to go is way better and less visual noise."

WobblySlug was built with a different perspective, "Overlay is commonplace in every ARPG I've played, the really strange option to not include it (or have plans for this). Minimap isn't the same, I like to have the ability to quickly toggle the overlay - take within the information - after which toggle off."

However, between your 'good riddance' comments and also the 'how dare they?' lot, there's an in-between, with a little confusion about why it isn't simply a choice so that people who want it may use it, and people who don't can be neglected. Others the same from the minimap, asking Blizzard to implement a choice to turn them back.

Maybe we'll have more UI customization on the line, but on launch, you will need to get used to some lack of an overlay map.
